What Corsican Mountain Villages Teach About Island Geography

Corsica looks compact on a Mediterranean map, yet the island behaves like a small continent lifted out of the sea. A spine of granite mountains rises to Monte Cinto at about 2,706 metres, valleys run steeply toward short coastal plains, and roads often turn a simple distance into a slow journey. That relief explains why inland settlements such as Corte, Speloncato, Évisa, Zonza or the villages of Castagniccia feel so different from the harbours below. They are not scenic accidents. They are answers to an island geography where altitude, water, pasture, chestnut woods and security shaped where people could live.

Corte makes the pattern visible. Its citadel stands above the meeting of the Tavignano and Restonica valleys, a position that helped the town serve as a political and educational centre in the island’s interior. Hill villages elsewhere used ridges and shoulders of land for similar reasons: they could watch approaches, keep arable pockets close, and remain linked to seasonal routes between winter grazing, summer pasture and forest. On Corsica, the mountain was not the empty space behind the coast. It was the structure that divided communities, protected them, and forced them to negotiate with slope and distance every day.

The island’s chestnut belt is one of the clearest examples of that negotiation. From the Genoese period onward, chestnut groves spread through parts of the interior, especially Castagniccia, and became a durable food system. Chestnut flour, bread and polenta-like dishes mattered because mountain fields were limited and grain imports could be uncertain or expensive. Terraces, mills and village ovens turned a difficult topography into a working landscape. Geography also shaped identity: short distances across a map could mean separate valleys, dialect differences, clan histories and political loyalties that were harder to flatten than a coastal road suggests.

Today the same geography creates both attraction and strain. Visitors come for stone houses, walking trails, views and the feeling of altitude above the sea. The regional natural park and long-distance routes such as the GR20 have made the mountain interior central to Corsica’s public image. But the villages also face aging populations, seasonal economies, wildfire risk, water stress and the cost of maintaining roads and services in terrain that resists easy infrastructure. A beautiful village photograph can hide the practical question of who can afford to live there year-round.

Corsican mountain villages therefore teach a useful lesson about islands. Isolation is not only a matter of being surrounded by water; it can be produced again and again by ridges, winter weather, river gorges and switchback roads. The coast connected Corsica to the Mediterranean, while the interior preserved local worlds at a much smaller scale. To read these villages well is to see stone, chestnut trees and citadels not as picturesque details, but as evidence of people arranging daily life around a demanding, protective and remarkably varied island landscape.

That is why a road map alone can mislead. A line between two Corsican villages may cross a pass, a ravine or a weather boundary that changes the cost of movement. Mountain settlement is best understood by time, effort and seasonal risk, not just by kilometres.
