Ginkgo biloba: the Geography of a Tree That Carries Deep Time
Ginkgo is not just a “living fossil.” Its story links Permian ancestors, Chinese refuges, temple cultivation, Hiroshima survivor trees and today’s carefully chosen city avenues.

Ginkgo biloba is often introduced with a phrase that sounds almost too neat: living fossil. The phrase is useful only if it starts a better story. A ginkgo on a city street is not a museum object that escaped change. It is the last living species of a once broader lineage, a tree whose fan-shaped leaves connect paleobotany, Chinese refuges, temple gardens, urban planning and careful conservation in one surprisingly geographic biography.
The deep-time part is real. Relatives of ginkgo appear in the fossil record far back in the age before flowering plants became dominant, and ginkgo-like leaves are familiar from rocks more than 100 million years old. Today, however, the whole surviving branch is represented by one species. That narrowing matters. It turns the tree from a botanical curiosity into a map of survival: where climate, mountains, people and cultivation allowed a lineage to persist while many of its relatives disappeared.

Botanists still discuss how much of ginkgo’s modern distribution is truly wild and how much reflects centuries of planting. The safest account is not a romance of untouched wilderness. The tree is native to China, with remnant or semi-wild populations associated with refuges and long human care, and it became widely planted around temples, gardens and later streets. Kew Gardens and writers such as Peter Crane have helped make that combination clear: ginkgo survived not because it was frozen in time, but because biology and culture overlapped.
The mechanism is visible in the tree itself. Ginkgo has tough, distinctive leaves, separate male and female trees, and seeds whose fleshy outer layer can smell unpleasant when it falls and decays. That is why many city plantings favor male cultivars. Urban foresters also value ginkgo because established trees can tolerate pruning, compacted soils, air pollution and difficult street conditions better than many ornamental species. In a modern avenue, the ancient lineage is filtered through very practical municipal decisions.

Hiroshima adds a different layer, but it should be told carefully. Several ginkgo trees near the hypocenter of the 1945 atomic bombing survived and later resprouted, becoming local symbols of endurance. They do not prove that ginkgo is invulnerable; no living thing is. They show that buds, roots and living tissue can persist after terrible damage, and that people can choose to protect such survivors as witnesses in a city’s memory.
The conservation limit is just as important as the hopeful image. Because ginkgo is common in cultivation, it can look secure, yet the International Union for Conservation of Nature has treated wild Ginkgo biloba as threatened. Street abundance can hide genetic narrowing, uncertain wild populations and dependence on human planting. The tree’s lesson is therefore not that old lineages will always save themselves. It is that survival often happens in places: a valley, a monastery garden, a botanical collection, a city pavement, a memorial park.
For readers, ginkgo changes the scale of an ordinary walk. A yellow leaf on a sidewalk belongs to autumn, but it also belongs to continental drift, extinction, cultivation and municipal care. The hopeful part is precise: when people understand the geography of survival, they can protect more than a pretty tree. They can protect the conditions that let deep time remain alive in the present.
