The Hidden Rivers Beneath Our Cities
Beneath the familiar grid of our city streets flows a secret network of forgotten waterways, their ghostly presence reminding us that nature can be redirected, but rarely erased.

Take a walk through any great city. Listen. Past the traffic and the distant sirens, you might hear a low hum from a manhole cover on a rainy day, or notice a street that dips and curves for no apparent reason. These are the subtle whispers of another landscape, one that lies just beneath the pavement: a hidden network of rivers, streams, and brooks, entombed in concrete but very much alive.
Most cities were born on the banks of rivers, their courses providing water, power, and transport. But as they grew, especially during the frantic expansion of the 19th century, these same waterways became a problem. They were polluted, smelly, and prone to flooding. They were obstacles to the rational, geometric street grids that planners adored. The solution, born of engineering prowess and a certain disregard for nature, was to bury them. In a quiet, relentless victory of concrete over current, rivers were funnelled into brick-lined tunnels and culverts, disappearing from sight and, eventually, from memory.
London is a classic case. The River Fleet, once wide enough for Roman galleys and later a notorious open sewer painted by Hogarth, now flows in the dark beneath the street that bears its name. Its neighbours, the Tyburn and the Walbrook, share a similar fate, their aqueous ghosts haunting the foundations of Buckingham Palace and the Bank of England. Their names linger in streets and wards, clues to a geography that has been deliberately overwritten.
These subterranean streams are not always silent. In New York's Greenwich Village, residents along a certain path have long complained of stubbornly damp basements and sump pumps that never rest. They are living atop the Minetta Brook, which still chuckles its way to the Hudson through the earth, indifferent to the property values above. These rivers act as a kind of urban poltergeist, occasionally flooding a cellar or nourishing a strangely verdant line of trees in a park, reminding us of their continued presence. They are the city’s plumbing, but also its memory, flowing silently through a concrete underworld.
In recent years, however, our thinking has begun to change. What if burying our rivers was not a permanent solution, but a temporary one? The concept of “daylighting” — liberating a river from its concrete tomb — has gained traction around the world. The most celebrated example is the Cheonggyecheon stream in Seoul, South Korea. For decades, it was hidden beneath a multi-lane elevated highway. In 2005, in a breathtaking feat of urban renewal, the highway was demolished and the stream was restored.
Today, the Cheonggyecheon is a 10.9-kilometre green corridor that runs through the heart of the city, a beloved public space teeming with life. It has reduced air pollution, lowered urban temperatures, and brought biodiversity back to the city centre. It proves that re-engaging with these lost waterways is not just about nostalgia; it’s about creating healthier, more resilient, and more humane cities. It is an admission that the grid is not everything, and that a little bit of wildness, a little bit of meandering flow, is something we have been missing.
So next time you walk your city's streets, pay attention to the contours of the land. Wonder about the names of the roads and the history they conceal. You may find you are walking on water, treading a path dictated by a river that refuses to be forgotten, waiting patiently for its chance to once again see the sun.
