His goal was military, but the commercial benefits were immediate. A century later, humanity decided going *over* was no longer sufficient. The Simplon Tunnel, a marvel of early 20th-century engineering, was drilled directly through the mountain's base. It vanquished the pass's ultimate tyrant: winter. The reliable, all-weather flow of goods it enabled permanently rewired the trans-Alpine economy. A pass is not merely a path; it is an economic argument rendered in stone and gradient. The mechanism is simple: a pass concentrates movement. Caravans, armies and pack animals cannot cross a mountain range everywhere, so the few workable saddles become places where states can tax goods, maintain roads, build inns and control risk. The Brenner Pass, about 1,370 metres above sea level, linked northern Italy with the German-speaking lands and later became one of the lowest major crossings of the central Alps. The Great St Bernard Pass, above 2,400 metres, tied Roman and medieval routes between the Rhône valley and northern Italy. Farther east, the Khyber Pass connected the Kabul basin with Peshawar and the Indus world, shaping trade and invasion routes for Achaemenid, Mughal, British and Afghan histories.

A pass alters trade because it changes the cost of distance. A merchant carrying silk, salt, wool or spices had to count fodder, snow season, bridge repairs and banditry as carefully as price. Villages near the climb earned money from porters, blacksmiths, muleteers and lodging; rulers earned tolls and political leverage. Even when a pass was dangerous, it could be cheaper than a long detour of hundreds of kilometres around a range.

The limits keep the story grounded. Passes did not act alone: ports such as Venice, cities such as Samarkand and river corridors such as the Rhine mattered just as much. Climate swings, avalanches and war could close routes for months. Modern rail tunnels and motorways have shifted the mechanism underground, but the old logic remains visible: geography narrows choice, and narrowed choice becomes power.
